Town or Acreage? A Practical Guide to Choosing Your Next Lifestyle

by Karen Cannady

Choosing between living in town and moving to an acreage is about much more than the house itself. Where you live can affect your commute, daily responsibilities, privacy, access to services, and even how you spend your weekends.

Both options can offer a great lifestyle. The important part is deciding which one fits the way you actually want to live.

Think About Your Daily Routine

Start by picturing an ordinary weekday rather than the perfect Saturday afternoon.

How far will you be travelling for work, school, groceries, appointments, sports, and other activities? Living in town may put more of these things close by, while acreage living can mean additional driving and planning.

Neither is necessarily better. It comes down to what works for your household.

Consider the Space You Want

One of the biggest reasons buyers look at acreages is space. A larger yard, additional privacy, room for animals, outbuildings, or simply more distance between neighbours can all be appealing.

But more space can also mean more maintenance. Grass, snow, fencing, driveways, trees, outbuildings, and other property features may require time and attention.

Think realistically about how much property you want to care for.

Look Beyond the House

When comparing a town property with an acreage, remember that you are evaluating more than bedrooms, bathrooms, and finishes.

With a rural property, buyers may also want to learn about the water source, septic system, heating, road access, internet availability, outbuildings, property boundaries, and other features that may not come into play with a typical home in town.

Choose the Lifestyle That Fits You

It can be easy to fall in love with a beautiful property, but your home should also support your everyday life.

Make a list of what matters most to you, whether that is privacy, convenience, land, a shorter commute, room for animals, nearby amenities, or less property maintenance.

If you are deciding between a home in town and an acreage in Central Alberta, I am always happy to help you explore the options and find a property that fits the lifestyle you are looking for.
