Realtor Insights: Spring Cleaning Made Simple: Outdoor Reset

Now that the snow’s mostly gone and our lawns are finally showing themselves (even if they’re still a bit soggy), it’s time to take our spring cleaning outdoors. We’re still waking up to chilly mornings here in Central Alberta, so planting might be a little ways off — but there are a few smart tasks you can get started on now.
Yard Prep: A Gentle Start
Let’s ease into it — the heavy lifting will come soon enough!
-
Rake & clean up debris: Winter winds blow in all kinds of surprises. A quick rake helps your lawn breathe, and it’s a great way to spot any low areas holding water.
-
Beware of snow mold: If you see fuzzy, grey patches in your grass, that’s likely snow mold — common and usually harmless. But if you have seasonal allergies or lung sensitivities, it’s best to steer clear until it clears up naturally. Raking too soon can stir up spores that aren’t great for anyone with sensitivities.
Gutters, Roof, and Drainage
Winter is tough on homes — especially when we’ve had heavy snow, ice buildup, and strong winds.
-
Clear your gutters & downspouts of twigs, leaves, and any leftover winter gunk to avoid drainage issues and flooding.
-
Check your shingles & siding for damage or lifting. Wind and freeze-thaw cycles can pull things loose without us even noticing.
-
Walk around the house and watch where water is pooling. Redirecting runoff now can save you from foundation issues later.
A Little Effort Now Goes a Long Way
You don’t need to knock it all out in one weekend — just getting started helps. Tackling a few of these early spring to-do’s sets your yard and home up for success, and helps you spot little issues before they turn into big ones.
If you’ve got go-to outdoor cleaning tips, or a task you actually look forward to doing each year, I’d love to hear about it! Drop me a message or leave a comment.
And stay tuned — planting season is just around the corner.
