Keeping Your Family Safe: Fire Prevention Tips from the Heart
Home is where we relax, laugh, and make memories with our loved ones. It’s also a place we want to keep as safe as possible. As a volunteer with the Forestburg Fire Department, I’ve seen how a few simple steps can make a big difference in preventing house fires. Let’s work together to protect our homes and families—here are a few easy tips to keep in mind:
- Check Your Smoke Alarms and CO₂ Detectors
Smoke alarms and CO₂ detectors are lifesavers—literally. Make sure you’ve got them on every level of your home and test them regularly. A quick monthly check and a yearly battery change can give you peace of mind and keep your family protected. - Have an Escape Plan
Does everyone in your home know how to get out safely in an emergency? Practice a fire drill so it’s second nature. A little planning now can save precious seconds later. - Stay Safe in the Kitchen
Cooking is fun, but it’s also one of the top causes of house fires. Keep a close eye on what’s on the stove, keep flammables away, and consider having a fire blanket handy—it’s an easy tool that can stop small flames before they grow. - Unplug What You Don’t Use
Overloaded outlets and frayed cords are hidden hazards. Unplugging things you’re not using not only saves electricity but also reduces risk. - Be Mindful of Heat Sources
Space heaters and fireplaces are cozy, but they need space—at least a meter from anything flammable. And don’t forget to get your chimney and furnace inspected regularly. - Candle Care
Love candles? Me too! Just keep them in sight, trim the wicks, and place them in well-traveled areas so you’ll always remember they’re burning. - Fire Extinguishers: Know How to Use Them
Having one is great knowing how to use it is even better. Remember: Pull the pin, aim low, Squeeze the handle, and Sweep side to side.
These small habits can add up to big safety. Fire prevention is about protecting what we love most—our families and our homes. If you ever need advice or help with a fire safety plan, visit your local fire department. They are always happy to share their knowledge and help keep the community safe. Check for local events they host or fire safety courses—they are a great way to stay informed and up to date!
Let’s look out for each other and keep our community safe!
Warmly,
Karen
